Program Description: QuitKey is a computer-assisted, self-help strategy for smoking cessation developed and evaluated with grant support from the National Institutes of Health and available for purchase from PICS, a private company. Using a scheduled, gradual reduction model, a small handheld computer prompts and gradually de-creases cigarette use over 10 to 28 days depending on initial smoking patterns.
Program Services: Telephone counseling (toll-free telephone support), web-based support and relapse prevention counseling for recent quitters. Program site is wheelchair accessible and accessible by public transportation. PICS periodically advertises on its web site for volunteers to participate in research studies and provides cessation resources to them. Self-help programs are accessible statewide. Program Description: "Taking Control" is a self-help audio (CD-ROM) program with printed guides that lead tobacco users through 14 days of holistic cessation strategies with an emphasis on the participation of a supportive family/household. This program has specialized advice for teens, youth and childbearing age women and caregivers. Online purchase & download is available.
"The Health Professional's Guide to Nicotine Addiction Intervention" is a 12-lesson manual (course) on society and public health issues of tobacco use with theory-based approaches to constructing interventions for individuals, groups and communities. Uses a case study format and online purchase & download is available.
Resources are available to assist cigarette, cigar and pipe smokers and smokeless tobacco users. Special focus on pregnant women, parents of young children, women, low-income populations, youth and smokers with disabilities.
